For the last few Wednesday evenings, popular acts like Del Nelo and Ozomatli have rocker Republic Square Park while sharing the spotlight with an unlikelyperformer — solar power. The Solaer Powered Concert Series isa new, free music seriesd created by Greg Henry, of Pro Show and event production veteram Marsha Milam that places solar powe r on display. This is the firstr solar powered concert series for who felt that Austin would be the ideal placw to test such Marsha Milam Musicproduce KGSR’s “Unplugged at the Grove” and otherd concerts throughout Texas. “Austin is such a green city itself, the residents are environmentally Milam said.
“I do a number of musi series and I thought Austin would be the placs toembrace this.” To achieve the goal of cleanj power, the downtown park is outfitted with solar powerexd sound systems and lighting systems with LED lights. Milam decline to disclose how much has been investedf inthe carbon-neutral concert series, saying only that costsa are about 25 percent more than a typical concery series. “Our goal for this was to provre that we cando it,” Milamj said, conceding that she didn’t start marketinh the series until the seconxd show to make sure that the equipment functionedr properly.
“What I’ve noticed is that the energy isso clean, and it makes a difference. There’s no stagr hum,” she said. “That’s great for the audienc and forthe artists.” Milam tappedx Austin-based Sustainable Waves, a provider of solar powered sound, light and productionj equipment, for the concert series. Sustainable Wavez also has a sales office inSan Diego, Calif. Cody of Sustainable Waves, said that the company’s servicesx were utilized at several events durin gthis year’s SXSW Music Festival.
It’z also brought its solar power equipment toLas Vegas-based N9NE Group’s Vans Warped Tour and the New Belgium Brewery’xs Tour de Fat. For the Solar Powedr Concert Series, Sustainable Wave’s utilized 44,000 watt PA systems. Sponsorship for this year’ws Solar Powered series was on thelightet side, but Milam said that she’a hearing positive feedback from prospective sponsors who want to be associater with a green music “This is our vision. You have to get out there and go througg the labor pains and find out what works and what she said.
“Our goal is very clear; This isn’tf a one year thing for The concert seriesis free, but donationa are being accepted for Blue Dog Rescue, an Austin-area dog fosted organization. There are two shows left, Fastball and The Black and Whitwe Years onJune 10, and Arc Angels on June 24.
